What to Do for Ankle Pain

Ankle pain refers to any kind of discomfort or pain in the ankles. Such discomfort may come from an injury, a sprain, or a medical condition. An ankle sprain is one of the most common causes of ankle pain. A sprain is when the ligaments, or tissues connecting bones, tear or become overstretched. Most of these strains occur when the foot rolls and the outside ankle twists towards the ground. Ankle sprains often swell and bruise. Pain can last for up to 14 days, but it may take several months for the injury to heal fully. Ankle pain can also be a result of a health condition, such as arthritis, gout, or an infection in a joint. Rest can help ankle pain and once the pain subsides, gentle exercise of the ankles can help gain mobility back and reduce swelling. If the pain is from arthritis, there is no cure, but it can be managed by continuing to move, practicing stretching and strengthening exercises, and keeping body weight in a healthy range. If one has broken their ankle, it is important to consult with a podiatrist to see how bad the break is and if the ankle needs to be set or if surgery is necessary. If after giving an injury time to heal, and making lifestyle modifications, the pain worsens, or it becomes impossible to bear weight on the affected foot, it is suggested you see a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment plan customized for you.

Gout Can Attack Your Big Toe

Gout is a condition caused by a buildup of uric acid directly related to foods that contain high levels of purines. The uric acid forms crystals that settle in the joints, commonly at the base of the big toe. This can cause sharp pain, inflammation, redness, and swelling. Foods that contain purines inhibit your body’s ability to shed uric acid properly. Men most often experience gout between the ages of 30 and 50, while women are more susceptible after the onset of menopause. Reducing the intake of purine-rich foods is a good way to prevent gout. Among them are beef, organ meats, certain types of seafood, as well as some vegetables and legumes. Drinking more water and less alcohol may also bring some relief. If you have developed gout, it is a good idea to see a podiatrist who can prescribe corticosteroids and other medicine to help reduce pain and uric acid levels.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Nooshin Zolfaghari from VIP Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Several Reasons Why Foot Pain Can Occur

There are 26 bones, several tendons, and ligaments that each foot is composed of. Many people worldwide will experience foot pain at least once during their lifetime. There are many causes of foot pain. It can be related to diabetes, inflammation, or wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. An uncomfortable foot condition known as athlete’s foot can cause itching and redness. A bunion is defined as a bony lump that forms on the side of the big toe. It can be bothersome while wearing shoes and many patients need to purchase larger shoes and socks. Bunions can develop due to genetic reasons or from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Patients with an ingrown toenail are often familiar with the pain and discomfort this ailment can cause. In severe cases, there might be a discharge, which may be indicative of an infection. Heel pain that is worse in the morning is usually linked to a condition called plantar fasciitis. If you have any foot pain and would like a proper diagnosis and to begin an effective treatment plan, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist.

Sports Injuries in Dancers

There are a variety of factors that can contribute to a dancer injuring their feet or ankles. Some factors are things the dancer cannot control, such as body type, age, the shape of feet and ankles, existing medical conditions or prior injuries, and the type of dance and surface they are dancing on. Other factors that can be avoided and are within the dancer’s control include not warming up/stretching/cooling down properly, wearing improper footwear, not staying hydrated or eating properly, and not building up the frequency or duration of performances and/or practices gradually. Dancing injuries can also occur if the dancer is attempting moves that are beyond their skill or ability at the time of injury. Any type of foot or ankle injury that a dancer suffers should be examined by a podiatrist as soon as possible. Trying to “muscle through” an injury that needs professional treatment can lead to further injury and may even prevent the dancer from being able to dance if the injury does not heal properly. Every dancer is different, and every injury is different. A podiatrist will create a custom treatment plan after thoroughly examining the dancer’s injury.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Dr. Nooshin Zolfaghari from VIP Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
